Statement of Practice:  The incumbent will serve as a Physical Therapist in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service which is part of a general medical and surgical hospital.  The incumbent will primarily work in the acute setting with some coverage of outpatient care as needed.  Specialty areas include but are not limited to neurology, orthopedics, geriatrics, cardiopulmonary, amputee rehab, and general medical/surgical care.  The incumbent must posses the knowledge and ability to integrate social, cultural, emotional and age specific (ages 18 to 65 and over) requirements into intervention planning.  He/she is an independent therapist who is responsible for evaluating referred patients, and muscle strength, sensory/perceptual deficits, coordination, functional mobility, pain scales, and social needs.  Incumbent modifies treatment plan according to patient response toward meeting established goals and documents treatment progression and/or modifications accordingly.  The incumbent will attend ward rounds, conferences, clinics, and relay pretinent information to other therapists; participate in in-service education activities of PM&R; assist in supervision of PT assistants.  The incumbent will particpate in appropriate, meaningful clinical and educational experiences for physical therapy students, as well as work study students and volunteers.  He/she will participate in continuing education programs as needed enhance professional skills and update knowledge.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship.  
  • Graduate from a degree program in physical therapy from an approved college or university approved by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).  The CAPTE is the only accreditatation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit entry-level physical therapy programs.  Possession of written documentation that applicant has a current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

For the GS-9 level:  In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicants must have one year of post degree progressively responsible experieince equivalent to the GS-7 level OR a master's degree in physical therapy or a directly related field.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-11 LEVEL:   In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicants must have one year of progressively complex experience and a broader scope of experience equivalent to the GS-9 level OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree; or doctoral degree in physical therapy or a directly related field.

EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 LEVEL:   To meet the required specialized experience for the GS-11 level, applicant must submit a transcript to receive credit for this education.
