The Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) improves the health of our veterans by providing a continuum of care through an integrated health care delivery system. Duties:
The Nurse is responsible for providing nursing care to patients, assuming responsibility and accountability for nursing actions.He/She completes initial assessments and re-assessments of patient condition and response to treatment and initiates follow-up as needed.He/She promotes discharge planning and continuity of care through developing an individualized plan of care in collaboration with the patient family and health care team.He/She must demonstrate knowledge of quality improvement process, role, and responsibility.He/She provides input into the evaluation process; identifying learning needs/goals.He/She recognizes specific differences in age, gender, era of service and culture across the population of veteran clients.He/She modifies communication and patient education to accommodate hearing, visual and cognitive impairments.He/She evaluates patient response to medications based on decreased absorption, metabolism and excretion of the drug and drug interactions.He/She implements interventions to maintain skin integrity and prevention of skin breakdown.He/She assesses elimination needs and implements interventions to maintain bowel and bladder continence as needed.He/She systemically assesses/reassesses the effectiveness of pain management interventions and takes appropriate actions.
Work Schedule:Shifts could include twelve hour tours; eight hour tours which could include indefinite evenings or nights; day/evening rotation; or day/night rotation. All shifts include weekends and holidays.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Qualifications:
- BLS issued by the American Heart Association.
- ACLS issued by the American Heart Association.
- One year critical care experience required.
- Citizen of the United States.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) http://www.nlnac.org or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) http://www.aacn.nche.edu/CCNE/reports/accprog.asp (NOTE: In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing).
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
- Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
- Must meet Physical Requirements (according to VA Directives and VA Handbook 5019).
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THIS POSITION ARE AS FOLLOWS: THESE QUALIFICATIONS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE ENHANCING.

Education/Experience Requirements:
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
