ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION:Positions will be filled at the following locations as vacancies occur. There MAY NOT be immediate vacancies at all locations. HOSPITALS: Pine Ridge Service Unit, Pine Ridge, South DakotaHEALTH CENTERS:Kyle and Wanblee, South Dakota. Positions may also be filled at other Indian Health Service locations including the Aberdeen Area Office and Tribal Organizations as vacancies occur or are established in the area.

POSITION DETAILS:  As a member of the health care team serves as the Nurse Practitioner providing primary health care for patients at the clinic.  Performs diagnostic services, which includes securing medical histories, conducting physical examinations; interpreting laboratory and x-ray result in order to define health problems and ascertain therapy required.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary range:$67,047.00- $96,436.00 (Annually)

    MAJOR DUTIES:
    • Provides comprehensive nursing, preventive and therapeutic health care services to patients and family members. 
    • Secures a health and developmental history from the patient or parent, records findings, and makes critical evaluations.
    • Performs basic physical assessment using techniques of observation, inspection, auscultation, percussion, palpitation, and diagnostic instruments.
    • Makes decisions concerning medical care needs of patients with physicians as well as decisions regarding nursing care needs.
    • Provides emergency services or crisis intervention in the absence of the physician as required.
    • Provides health care and preventive services to healthy individuals, including guidance in nutrition, common illnesses, accidents, child growth and development, and child rearing.
    • Knowledge of the full range of professional community health nursing principles, practices, and procedures applied in providing services in clinic, home, school, and community environments.
    • Ability to counsel and teach individuals, families, and groups; take medical histories, conduct physical examinations, communicate lab results, etc.
    • Knowledge & Ability to treat chronic health problems such as hyper-tension and diabetes in clinic and/or home environments.
    • Knowledge & Ability to provide care appropriate to the age of patients; Ability to identify and categorize each patient's age-specific grouping of needs i.e., infant to geriatrics.
    • Performs other position related duties as assigned.




    QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

    You must meet all the BASIC REQUIREMENTS below:

    1) Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

    2) Licensure:  All applicants must have an active current registration as a professional nurese in a State, District of columbia, the Commwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.  Copy of your license must be provided.

    3) Certification: Certification by the appropriate certifying body (such as the American Nursing Association) as a Nurse Practitioner.  A copy of the certification must be provided with your application.

    NOTE: The above factor has been determined to be essential to the positon and is identified as a Selective Place Factor (SPF).  Failure to submit a copy of your certification will result in loss of consideration of this position.

    In addition to the above, you must also meet the following ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS for the grade level you want consideration for:

    GS-11: Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education OR one year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the Federal Government.

    Specialized Experience at the GS-9:  Is defined as serving as a Nurse Practitioner providing direct and comprehensive primary, preventative and therapeutic medical and nursing care for all patient age groups.

    GS-12:  One year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government.

    Specialized Experience at the GS-11:  Is defined as serving as a Nurse Practitioner providing direct and comprehensive primary, preventative and therapeutic medical and nursing care for all patient age groups as well as assisting other health professionals develop treatment protocols and standard policies and procedures.

    Specialized Experience:  Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.  To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent ot at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

    For example of specialized experience for Advanced Nurse Practitioners:  Work experienc ereflecting knowledge of current nursing principles, practices, procedurs, standards of care required to provide advance nursing care skill set.  This may include assessing the health status of an individual, managing the care of selected patients, and providing various medicla treatments, health teaching, counseling to invidiual and families through out all age groups for the particular speciality you are applying for.


    Education:  Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clincial specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely relate dnon-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.
