Major Duties: Designated first-line supervisory authority, responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operations of their units, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice.This includes the authority to accept, amend, or reject the work of subordinates.

Has continuing responsibility for all the following functions:Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work; Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates; Evaluating the performance of subordinates; Making recommendations for appointments, advancements or reassignments of subordinates; Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters; Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors; Recommending and/or tracking disciplinary action where appropriate; Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training; Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.(Non-citizens may be appointed when no qualified citizens are available in accordance with regulations issued by the Under Secretary for Health or designee).

Licensure: Active, full, current and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Professional Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), in the United States or the District of Columbia.The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA.

Physical Standards/Requirements: See VA Handbook 5005, Part III, and Chapter 2, paragraph 7, and VA Handbook 5019, Occupational Health Services. All applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the position.Must be able to lift (30 lbs or more); twisting and/or bending, standing and/or walking almost constantly during the course of the day.

Must have a BSN and be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate state accrediting agency and/or the National League of Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant.In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.
