At the full performance level, the incumbent performs clerical work in support of the care and treatment given to patients such as receiving patients or maintaining patient files; work administering or advising on medical record systems; or work maintaining medical records in a ward, clinic, or other such unit of a medical facility. Receives and relays incoming and outgoing telephone and intercom messages. Receives and responds to unclear inquiries from patients concerning a variety of medical, personnel, and administrative matters.Schedules specialized appointments for the unit and with other specialized units within the health care system.Receives and directs patients and visitors, answers routine inquiries and makes appropriate referral of questions concerning patient's condition.Determines general nature of inquiry and independently responds to all administrative questions.Ensures that nursing staff is reminded of patient appointments and that required medical documentation is available.Updates records to include treatment or test results.Receives and processes applicants for admission and outpatient treatment.Independently makes benefit eligibility determinations.Upon request of the patient, the incumbent completes appropriate forms and initiates actions to the receipt, deposit or disbursement of patient's funds.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Candidates must be citizens of the United States.At the GS-4 level, one year of general experience having performed clerical, office, or other experience preparing, receiving, reviewing, and verifying documents, maintaining office records, locating and compiling data or information from files for reports, and similar clerical support work within an organization OR two years of education above high school.At the GS-5 level, one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level conducting clerical, receptionist and secretarial duties associated with patient care and treatment; determining eligibility of clients; answering routine questions from patients and family members; resolving problems related to processing client's request for treatment OR four years of education abovehigh school.This position requires a qualified typist (40wpm).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES TO BE ADDRESSED:



1.Ability to read, interpret and apply knowledge of VA regulations and directives to include knowledge of federal state laws.


2.Ability to communicate orally and in writing in order to deal effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and with varying levels of understanding.


3.Knowledge of medical terminology.


4.Knowledge of content and format of Consolidated Health Record (CHR).


5.Thorough knowledge of the internal organization of the many administrative and clinical services of the medical center in order to properly refer inquiries.


6.Ability to understand and follow instructions on a daily basis.


7.Skill in operating a personal computer and officeequipment, i.e., fax machine, copier machine, etc.
