This position is a research physical scientist located in the Science Directorate (SD) and specializes in analysis of active and passive remote sensing data for atmospheric research. Research is focused on developing and implementing remote sensing instruments and related research programs that advance the understanding of clouds, aerosols, key atmospheric species, and the Earth’s radiation balance and determine their impact on atmospheric processes and climate. These areas have been identified as critical uncertainties in current estimates of global warming and represent key research priorities of the NASA Science Mission Directorate and within the Climate Change Science Program. This position will also provide support for SD missions and contributes to proposal efforts to competitively obtain funding for research projects aligned with Agency strategic goals and objectives.

The scientist has broad responsibilities to develop and apply remote sensing techniques to study aerosols, clouds, and atmospheric composition and their role in the Earth’s climate system. Provides expertise for developing, applying, and maturing algorithms and software for analyzing current and next-generation airborne/spaceborne active/passive remote sensing data sets including those from high spectral resolution lidar systems in order to answer critical questions concerning the role of aerosols and clouds on the climate system. Develops mathematical techniques to derive physical parameters from lidar measurements including cloud and aerosol detection, retrieval of aerosol extinction, airmass characterization, and comparison of results with in-situ measurements. Supports field operations to acquire data from ground-based and airborne active remote sensing (lidar) instruments. This includes data acquisition, quick turn-around of data products in the field, and real-time diagnosis and troubleshooting of software systems. The scientist is responsible for complex investigations that utilize both theoretical models and experimental data to quantify relationships between aerosols, clouds, meteorological parameters, and remotely sensed radiation data over various time and space scales.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of undergraduate or graduate education only:
Any appropriate field of engineering, physical or computer science or mathematics. Study must include or be supplemented by six semester hours or the equivalent in appropriate life or other natural science courses, and include or be supplemented by at least two courses which would provide knowledge of subjects appropriate to the vacancy being filled.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Professional experience in an area specializing in active and remote sensing data for atmospheric research; or
(b) Any combination of experience and graduate study; or
(c) Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field which specialized in atmoshperic research (active and remote sensing).

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Resumes will be rated by an automated system (Resumix) that matches the competencies extracted from the candidate's resume to the competencies identified by the selecting official for the position. Candidates will be evaluated on the competencies they possess that are directly related to the duties of the job, as described in the announcement. Candidates should refer to NASA's Applicant Guide for assistance in developing a complete resume, as NASA will not accept separate KSA statements."

Qualified candidates will be assigned to one of three quality levels based on the degree to which their competencies meet the duties required. A human resources specialist will validate the qualifications of those candidates eligible to be referred to the selecting official. For the purpose of the Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) and the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP), candidates rated in the top quality level are considered well-qualified.
