JOB SUMMARY:
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organization. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority effecting American agriculture.

The incumbent will investigate the mechanism of a natural herbicide and perform experiments to determine its spectrum of activity and soil persistence. The research will include greenhouse and laboratory experiments using a variety of physiological and biochemical approaches. In the greenhouse the incumbent will determine whether the natural herbicide enhances the herbicidal activity of other commercial products. In the laboratory , the incumbent will synthesize the radiolabeled active ingredient and measure its uptake, translocation and metabolism in plants of interest and its persistence in agronomically relevant soils.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
This position requires a Ph.D in Plant Physiology or a related field of study (Weed Science or Plant Biochemistry) that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Knowledge of plant physiology and biochemistry, including the purification and characterization of enzymes, heterologous expression of proteins, and the use of radioactive tracers are desirable.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
