JOB SUMMARY:Created by Congress in 1828, the purpose of the United States Capitol Police was to provide security for the United States Capitol building. Today, our mission has expanded to provide the Congressional community and visitors with the highest possible quality of a full range of police services. These services are provided through the use of a variety of specialty support units and a network of foot patrols, vehicular patrols and fixed posts.

Today's United States Capitol Police officer has primary responsibility for protecting life and property, preventing, detecting and investigating criminal acts, and enforcing traffic regulations throughout a large complex of Congressional buildings, parks and thoroughfares. Additionally, the protection of Members of Congress, Officers of Congress and their families is expanded by statue to the entire United States, it's territories and possessions and the District of Columbia.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Applicants must be 21 years of age in order to apply, but not have reached their 37th birthday on date of appointment.

Please note:(Age may be waived with prior Federal Law Enforcement experience, however, military service does not apply to the age waiver)


All applicants must have a High School Diploma or GED.


You must be a US. citizen to qualify for this position.

You will be required to maintain firearm proficiency and carry a firearm and while performing duties of this position.

After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

You must have a passing score on the required test before any further processing is initiated. 

You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.

You can be appointed into this position as long as you are at least 21 years of age.

You must have a valid driver's license to qualify for this position.

You may need to lift and move heavy items.


You may need to stand for prolonged periods on concrete floors and walk over rough and uneven terrain.


You may need to work outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions.

Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
