This is an open continuous announcement which will establish an inventory of applicants interested in a career as a Automotive Mechanic with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Your job will include:

  • Troubleshooting, repairing and/or overhauling major automotive components and systems such as engines, transmissions, fuel injection systems, emission control systems and other assemblies
  • Tearing down, adjusting, repairing, reassembling and running operational checks of systems following instructions contained in technical manuals
  • Using a wide variety of test equipment such as computerized engine analyzers, compression testers, test benches, multimeters, and special feeler and dial gauges
  • Completing repairs and installations with little or no technical advice

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:WG-10: You must have experience troubleshooting and repairing a variety of automotive systems such as engines, transmission and gear reduction systems, transaxles, drive line and rear axle assemblies, electrical and electronic systems, fuel injection systems, emission control systems, braking systems, hydraulic and other assemblies. You must be capable of interpreting and applying manufacturer's repair manuals, schematics, diagnostic codes and safety manuals sufficient to accomplish these tasks and be familiar with all tools, equipment, and materials used by automotive mechanics.

In addition to the experience described above you must also have the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. This means you must be able to work independently, make decisions, accept job responsibility, exercise initiative and plan operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics (KSAO's):

Candidates who meet the minimum qualification requirements are required to possess certain Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Other Characteristics (KSAO's) to successfully perform the functions of this position.  Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their attainment of these KSAO's in an online job questionnaire.  The KSAO's are: 

  • Ability to interpret and apply manufacturers' repair manuals and technical            specifications
  • Skill in the use of hand tools and power tools common to the occupation
  • Knowledge of the makeup, operation, and installation of complex automotive systems and assemblies
  • Skill in repairing or rebuilding a variety of automotive system

ASE Certification: ASE certification is required for duty stations located in California. For all other locations, it is preferred.

Language Requirement:   For positions in Puerto Rico, applicants must be able to read, write, and speak Spanish, fluently.

Work Conditions :   You will make repairs on vehicles where parts worked on are in hard-to-reach places. You must stand, stoop, stretch and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions often for extended periods of time. You may frequently lift and carry parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Due to continuous exposure to dirt, dust, and grease with the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts and strains, you will be required to follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses, and respirators.

Travel:   You may be required to travel away from your normal duty station.

Overtime and Shift Work :  Call back and emergency overtime may be regular requirements of this position.
