Duties are performed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center Hospital Bldgs 2 & 4. Position is under the supervision of the chief of Hospital Security Office. Work is accomplished by walking through buildings, parking areas, assisting personnel, and possible physical altercations with individuals.

"This position will be filled at the Walter Reed Medical Treatment Facility but will be transferred to the Community Hospital at Ft. Belvoir in 2011. The duties of the position will remain as advertised, but the duty location will change in order for the Hospital to meet mission needs."

    Performs various aspects of law enforcement work designed to maintain law and order and preserve the peace. Typically prevents, responds to, and/or resists attempted violations, apprehends and detains offenders, and relinquishes control to police or other law enforcement officers assigned to the case. Detects trespassing violations. Controls personnel access to restricted and controlled areas. Operates CCTV and security alarm systems. Patrols highly sensitive and restricted areas by foot. Responds to intrusion and duress alarms. Receives formal and on-the-job training on anti-terrorism, physical security, general security, emergencies, legal authority and jurisdiction, sabotage & espionage of federal property, weapons qualifications and care of weapons, self-defense and detention, etc. Provides armed guard services. Provides protection to VIPs, will drive government vehicle, requiring valid drivers license. Enforces all applicable security regulations.

    General Schedule
  • GS-06: One year of experience directly related to the occupation and equivalent to the next lower grade level. Education is not creditable.

    Specialized experience: candidates resumes must identify one year of specialized experience & training that provided all of the following: Work with a Federal, State, municipal, local or private organization that involved protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or tresspass, maintaining order, subject to rules, regulations, procedures, & principles of physical security, force protection, and some police operations. Experience with communication equipment, and cross-trained on using electronic security system (ESS). Experience with law enforcement equipment, including restraining devices (handcuffs), safety equipment (L.C., fire extinguishers), weaponry, two way communication devices, and motor vehicles. Interaction with visitors/patients/VIPs.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 1. Individual must pass a security check and be capable of receiving a Department of Defense Secret clearance for continued employment. 2. Individual must pass drug screening prior to hiring and pass periodic drug and alcohol testing on a random basis. 3. Shift work is required in this position as well as work on weekends and holidays. In the event of an emergency (e.g., inclement weather, disaster coverage, etc.), employee may be required to report for duty outside of scheduled shift. 4. Must be fully qualified to operate a government vehicle. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Loss of license may result in removal from the position. 5. All Security Guards will be required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual physical agility test. Failure to meet the physical agility test requirements will result in separation. Test requirements will be determined IAW AR 190-56 not to supersede the Army PT standards. Must meet established hearing and vision tests. 6. Employee must qualify annually or within the requirement of AR 190-56 with a 9mm Semi-Automatic pistol and be proficient in any other required firearms. Must maintain competency in using the scanner metal detector and oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray/foam. 7. As a condition of employment and continued employment individual must not have any criminal convictions nor receive any while employed in this position. 8. Employees and prospective employees of this job are expected to maintain a high standard of conduct. 9. Incumbents must successfully complete and pass entrance physical & psychological examinations and follow-up examinations. 10. Employee must wear a uniform. 11. Employee must be trained & maintain current required certifications in CPR techniques and must know first aid. 12. Must not have any medical condition that precludes the wearing of a chemical protective mask and over garments.
