This position is located in the River District, Division of Resource and Visitor Protection, Grand Canyon National Park. Incumbent rows an 18 foot inflatable raft on the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park. Performs various functions within the River District work unit including preparation for and participation in National Park Service river trips in an 18 foot oar powered inflatable rafts. Engages in visitor contact, resources monitoring and rehabilitation, concessions evaluation, hiking, trail work, trash pick up, backcountry toilet maintenance and other river trip support services. Performs various boat shop duties including food purchasing and packing, boat repair, painting, shuttle driving, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Uses heavy effort to row/guide the raft on the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park. River rapids are rated on a 1 to 5 scale. The Colorado River, through Grand Canyon National Park, is the only river in North America whose rapids exceeds Class V. Coordination of hand, eye and boat are absolutely necessary to direct the raft in extreme white water conditions. Rows an inflatable rubber raft through hazardous rapids for three (3) to twelve (12) hours a day for 12 to 30 days at a time. Lifts heavy (exceeding 70 pounds) objects while loading and unloading boats one or more times a day. Makes extended hikes for trail patrol along the side canyons in addition to rowing part of the day and packing and unpacking the boats.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: On patrol trips, incumbent will experience exposure to temperatures from 120 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer to sub-freezing during winter trips. Climate is generally dry but summer storms occur frequently and it may snow on the river during the winter. Incumbent may be drenched by river water (approximately 48 degrees Fahrenheit year round) at any time while on the River. While rafting the River the incumbent t will experience hazardous/difficult rapids, resulting in violent tossing and turning. While on the trail patrol, the incumbent is exposed to high cliffs, narrow trails, falling rocks, uncertain footing, and extreme temperatures. Will work at altitudes between 2000 to over 7000 feet.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Housing is not available in the Park for intermittent employees. The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is located in northcentral Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter. Grand Canyon Village has schools and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 3,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Sunday, January 15, 2012. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.
For WG: Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required; however you must be able to demonstrate the rough experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Examples of experience for this position include: Rowing an 18 foot inflatable raft on the Colorado River. All qualification requirements must be met by the application date.
QUALIFICATIONS:To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.

1. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
2. You are required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Category rating procedures will be used to rate and rank candidates. Candidates will be ranked into 3 categories:
