JOB SUMMARY:The BLM manages more land - approximately 253 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. BLM is seeking a dynamic and energetic individual to join our team at the Northwest Colorado Interagency Fire Unit to serve as a Lead Wildland Firefighter.

The main purpose of this position is to perform wildland fire
fighting work on a Interagency Hotshot Crew. The incumbent
will be part of a hotshot crew/hand crew and will serve as a working
leader of three or more crew members. This crew will perform work
directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities
including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring,
hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed burning.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet one of the requirements below- please be sure to include this information in your resume.
To qualify for the GS-05: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service as a Range Technician (Fire) or directly related position where you performed difficult and responsible work under general supervision. Examples: on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control, prevention or suppression work; operating and maintaining specialized wildland fire tools/equipment/
vehicles.
OR
You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
OR
You must have an equivalent combination of experience and education
described above. For example, the completion of three years of
education towards a qualifying bachelor`s degree and at least 6
months of specialized experience as described above.
To qualify for the GS-06: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 in the Federal service, as
a Range Technician (Fire)or in a directly related position. Examples:
on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control, prevention or suppression work; operating and maintaining specialized wildland fire tools/equipment/vehicles and may include leading crewmembers.
OR
You must have completed six months of graduate level college education related to range technician work such as a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to this position.
OR
You must have an equivalent combination of experience and education
described above. For example, 6 months of specialized experience and
3 months of appropriate graduate study.
Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

* Knowledge of fire behavior, hazards, prescribed fire and fire suppression tactics sufficient to make decisions regarding initial attack actions, crew safety, and deployment of assigned resources.
* Knowledge of firefighting techniques and practices utilizing fire engine, water handling and pumps, firing devices, helicopter, hand crews and associated equipment in a variety of fire management operations.
* Ability to lead a small group of firefighters in wildland fire suppression and fuels management activities.
* Demonstrate knowledge in both mechanical and prescribed fire operation with an ability to assist others.

This is a seasonal appointment; you will be in a pay status for at least 6 months, but less than 12 months a year. When work or funds are not available you will be placed in non-pay status.

This position requires regular and recurring overtime and shift work.
This is a primary fire position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The date immediately proceeding an individual's 37th birthday is the maximum age at which an applicant can be initially hired into a primary firefighter position.
