JOB SUMMARY:

The NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD in Portsmouth, Virginia is one of the largest shipyards in the world specializing in repairing, overhauling and modernizing ships and submarines.  It is the oldest and largest industrial facility that belongs to the U.S. Navy, and it's also the most multifaceted.

• Fabricates, repairs, and installs fabric articles such as tents, containments, weather and protective enclosures, various types of covers, and other ship and facility accessories. 
• Measures, cuts, and fabricates various fabrics such as polyurethane, PVC, canvas, rubber, plastics, fibrous material, leather, naugahyde, vinyl-coated nylons (Herculite), and other materials. 
• Uses blueprints, specifications, and sketches to plan work and make templates and patterns. 
• Operates cutting devices, bobbin-winder machines, several types of power sewing machines, RF heat-sealing machines, and other tools and equipment.

NOTE: Duties involve climbing and working at heights up to 100 feet.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

To be considered for these positions, you must demonstrate that you are able to do the work of the position under normal supervision and possess all of the following: knowledge of technical practices in fabric work; knowledge of measurement and layout techniques; skill in the operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in the fabric worker trade; and the ability to interpret blueprints, instructions, and specifications.

May be required to operate cranes, hoists, forklifts, and/or hand trucks to handle heavy material and equipment.

Work is performed inside and outside and is subject to extreme weather conditions.

You may be required to work both inside and outside in excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness or chilling weather conditions, be exposed to excessive and/or constant intermittent noise; work in confined areas and on slippery or uneven surfaces; work in awkward uncomfortable positions; and enter accesses 18 inches in diameter.

While working, you may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, moving objects, elevations, electricity, sharp edges, and confined spaces. 

This job requires lifting and/or carrying weights of 45 pounds and over.
