JOB SUMMARY:

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organization.  ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.

Obesity is becoming pandemic worldwide, particularly in developed countries. However, the prevention of obesity is a great challenge. Accurate prediction of individual risk will provide effective strategies for obesity prevention and treatment.

Through the use of genome-wide association data, the incumbent will identify genetic and environmental (dietary and lifestyle) factors that contribute to obesity.  In addition, the incumbent will develop or use existing statistical methods to predict obesity risk.  Research methods to be employed include statistical and genetic analysis, bioinformatics, and genome data mining.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

This position requires a recent Ph.D. in genetics or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.  Knowledge of biostatistics, population genetics, nutrition, SAS and R programming skills are highly desirable.

Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
