JOB SUMMARY:

The listed position is at the Marietta Repair Fleet which is a marine based repair party originating from Marietta, Ohio. The Repair Fleet is responsible for major/minor maintenance for 45 District projects which includes 9 high lift Locks and Dams and 36 flood control projects dispersed over a wide geographic region. The majority of maintenance activities take place on the Ohio and KanawhaRivers at locations in WV, OH, and KY. Work performed with a travelling repair party, Duty Station will be closest navigation project to selected applicant's permanent residence.

Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications and work orders. Makes a wide-range of welds, from simple to precision welding, including welds of dissimilar metals. Determines disassembly or repair necessary, and materials to be used. Works with light, heavy gauge and hardened metals, i.e., mild steel, carbon alloy steel, stainless steel, copper on brass, brass on stainless steel, cast iron, nickel and bronze. Uses electric, oxyacetylene, oxyhydrogen gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc, and gas carbon arc welding processes to weld metal parts and structures ranging from .025 inches to very thick metal which requires multiple welding passes. Devises special jigs and fixtures to hold parts to be welded. Positions and clamps work, preheats metal and maintains temperature to prevent distortion. Incumbent utilizes computers and software, including Corps-developed software.
This is a full time Temporary position (aprrox 6 to 8 mos). May be assigned to other essential duties during lay-up from primary assignment.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Ability to do the work of a Welder without more than normal supervision. Applications will also be reviewed for the following.
- Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
- Use of Measuring Instructions
- Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
- Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
- Knowledge of Metals
- Dexterity and Safety.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:The work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling. Work may be done in awkward and cramped positions such as when welding in hard to reach places. May handle objects weighing twenty to fifty pounds, and occasionally objects weighing in excess of fifty pounds. Incumbent must be able to perform all physical requirements of this position. Duties include but are not limited to pushing and pulling bars and levers, winding cranks and winches, lifting and holding lines, climbing ladders and steep stairways, working in confined spaces, and working on steep and uneven ground. Incumbent must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds unassisted or up to 100 pounds with the assistance of one other person. A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Welding: Work is completed in all types of weather,r including inclement weather of extreme heat and cold. Incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises and shock from cutting tools, moving parts and electric current (440 volts). Incumbent is subject to dangers including but not limited to drowning and injury from falls and loads on overhead cranes. Incumbent utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment for those conditions which may be heavy and uncomfortable. Incumbent must be capable or working in conditions of dust, welding fumes, paint vapors and sandblast particles utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment for those conditions. This position requires employee to use protective equipment.
MUST POSSESS THE WELDER CERTIFICATION UNDER AMERICAN WELDING SOCIETY (AWS) CODE D1.1. AND VALID STATE DRIVERS LICENSE

- Temporary Duty (TDY) travel is 90 percent.
- Position requires employee to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain all Corps of Engineers licenses associated with this position.
