JOB SUMMARY:The NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD in Portsmouth, Virginia is one of the largest shipyards in the world specializing in repairing, overhauling and modernizing ships and submarines. It is the oldest and largest industrial facility that belongs to the U.S. Navy and it's also the most multifaceted.

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs naval vessels’ main propulsion machinery and associated equipment/components. 
  • Repairs and installs ship machinery such as cargo-handling machinery, anchor-handling gear, elevators, fire fighting equipment, etc.
  • Performs overhaul, repair, modification, and refueling of Nuclear Reactor Plan systems (primary and secondary) and parts associated with submarine and surface ships. 
  • Performs installation and repairs to foundations, operating machinery, and principal components of a ship’s armament.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

To be considered for these positions, you must demonstrate that you are able to do the work of the position under normal supervision; possess a knowledge of the various mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment and machinery; the ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.; the ability to use and maintain tools and equipment such as levels, feeler gauges, dial indicators, micrometers, tachometers, and calipers, flange facing machines, grinders, small boring bars, and cutting machines; and a knowledge of the scientific principles used in the marine machinery trade.



Physical exam is required.

This position requires the ability to lift and/or carry weights 45 pounds and over.   Heavy physical exertion is required at frequent intervals.

You may be required to work both inside or outside in excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness or chilling weather conditions, be exposed to excessive and/or constant intermittent noise; work in confined areas and on slippery or uneven surfaces; work in awkward uncomfortable positions; and enter accesses 18 inches in diameter.

While working, you may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, moving objects, elevations, electricity, sharp edges, and confined spaces.

You may be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present such as silica, asbestos, fumes, dust, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and chemicals.

The primary work accomplished is at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth however, the incumbent may be assigned to other duty stations throughout the Hampton Roads area.
