JOB SUMMARY:
The NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD in Portsmouth, Virginia is one of the largest shipyards in the world specializing in repairing, overhauling and modernizing ships and submarines. It is the oldest and largest industrial facility that belongs to the U.S. Navy, and it's also the most multifaceted.
Applicants under this announcement will be considered for full-time and/or seasonal (on-call) career/career-conditional employment.

Additional Duty Location Info:
Many vacancies - Portsmouth, VA
- Overhauls dry dock, pump well, and caisson equipment and pumping equipment.
- Repairs and installs pumps, valves, piping components, gauges, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) wastewater treatment plants, and any mechanical facility equipment.
- Conducts preventive maintenance inspections on dry dock, pump well, and caisson equipment.
- Examines and troubleshoots equipment and machinery.
- Removes, installs, assembles, and disassembles a variety of machinery and equipment, including: valves, pumps, diesel engines, bearings, couplings, and motors.
- Performs oil sampling and lubrication of various pump well, dry dock, and caisson equipment.
- Performs alignment of pumps and motors.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To be considered for these positions, you must demonstrate that you are able to do the work of the position under normal supervision, operate, maintain, overhaul, install, repair, and adjust mechanical equipment, systems and components associated with dry docks, caissons, capstans, and environmental response systems.
Conditions of Employment:
Physical exam is required.
This position requires the ability to lift and/or carry weights 50 pounds and over. Heavy physical exertion is required at frequent intervals.
You may be required to work both inside and outside in excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness or chilling weather conditions; be exposed to excessive and/or constant intermittent noise; work in confined areas and on slippery or uneven surfaces; work in awkward or uncomfortable positions; and enter accesses 18 inches in diameter.
While working, you may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, moving objects, elevations, electricity, sharp edges, and confined spaces.
You may be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present such as silica, asbestos, fumes, dust, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and chemicals.
